WE SPOKE TO GRUFF RHYS AHEAD OF NO.6

Gruff Rhys – Super Furry Animals

Playing Festival No.6 is a huge deal for us Super Furry Animals. Three of us grew up in the surrounding mountain villages so it feels like a bit of a homecoming show, as a big part of the audience will be from the area. As festivals go it’s hard to imagine a crazier and more beautiful setting. It’s also located in the heartland of the Welsh language so visitors from afar get not only to experience the insanely fantastical architecture of Clough Williams Ellis’s surreal village of Portmeirion, and the incredible landscape of Eryri (Snowdonia) but also it’s a chance to hear and see one of Europe’s oldest and most vibrant living language close up. It’s great for us to get all these amazing bands and DJ’s coming to the area as not many touring acts usually come here.  And equally maybe it’s a chance for music fans who have travelled far to No6 to hear some of the local bands play. It’s a festival where you can get to hear great international bands like Hot Chip and also get to see someone like the legendary Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog who are popular in Wales and deserve a bigger stage elsewhere too. Alternatively you can just dance to an ANDY VOTEL DJ set as he usually mixes in a few old Welsh language psychedelic and industrial bangers into his set of world wide Utopian futurist music from the past and joins up all the dots in one set.
